"Tony Carter is one of New Zealand's most experienced and respected professional directors. He has operated at the highest levels of New Zealand business over his career, having served as Chief Executive and Managing Director of Foodstuffs, and on the boards of numerous iconic New Zealand companies, including Air New Zealand, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, ANZ Bank, Fletcher Building and Mitre 10. He is currently the Chairman of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, and is also a Director of Fletcher Building and ANZ Bank New Zealand. Tony started out working for his family company, Carter Group Limited, in Christchurch until 1986 when he purchased a Mitre 10 store. He worked his way up to serve as a Director of Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited, eventually becoming Chairman of Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited in 1993. Tony then went on to lead New Zealand's largest retail organization, Foodstuffs Group, as Managing Director for nearly a decade. In 2014, Tony was recognised as the Chairperson of the Year at the Deloitte Top 200 awards. The judges credited him with having made the transition from chief executive to a career in governance at the highest level with consummate ease. In July 2018, Air New Zealand announced Tony will retire from his current role as Chairman of the airline in September 2019. He remains Chairman of the NZX-listed medical device manufacturer Fisher & Paykel Healthcare. Tony has a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and a Masters of Engineering from the University of Canterbury. He also holds a Masters of Philosophy from Loughborough University of Technology in the United Kingdom."
