Elton John blasts 'relentless character assassination' of Harry and Meghan2019|01:28
Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres have spoken out to fiercely support Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. The royals have been facing a backlash in the British media for recent trips to Spain and the south of France. The Sun newspaper blasted the couple for being hypocritical "eco-warriors" who flew on private jets, despite voicing concerns over the environment and conservation. But the A-list celebrities hit back on Monday (August 19). In a series of tweets, the 'Rocketman' singer said he was "deeply distressed by (the) distorted and malicious account in the press." And appealed to the media to stop what he called the almost daily "relentless and untrue assassinations on their character." Elton John revealed he provided the private jet for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for security reasons. And that a contribution had been made to a charity to offset the carbon emissions involved. After meeting Harry and Meghan to talk wildlife conservation, the U.S. talk show host DeGeneres said: "They were the most down-to-earth, compassionate people. Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you're trying to do is make the world better." Harry and Meghan's wedding last year was marked by an outpouring of affection in Britain. But less than a year later, the couple have found themselves on the receiving end of a barrage of negative news stories. They have ranged from the $3 million cost of renovating their new home to reports dubbing Meghan "Duchess Difficult."
