Facebook can be ordered to remove content2019|00:44
A big blow to Facebook and fans of free speech: Europe's top court ruled Thursday that countries in the bloc can order the social networking company to scan and remove illegal content and that those rulings can apply globally. Facebook slammed the decision saying it's not the role of social media platforms to monitor, interpret and remove speech that may be illegal in any particular country. Free speech advocates say the decision have a chilling effect on freedom of expression. And they say authoritarian regimes could take advantage of the decision to silence their critics. The court case was sparked by an Austrian Green Party politician who sued Facebook, asking it to remove a comment she said undermined her honor and asked that it also take down reposts of it.
