At the start of 1916 the German strategic situation on all fronts had stabilised. Their advance into Russia had seemingly crushed the Czar's ability to mount a counter-offensive, and the Central powers had solidified their positions. But the German General staff were no closer to achieving the objectives they had set themselves in 1914.
