The colour red has symbolised danger in many cultures for thousands of years. It has the longest wavelength of any colour on the visible spectrum, meaning you can see it from a greater distance than other colours. This system of colour-coded signals remained in place for several decades, until it became clear that using white or clear for go could cause serious problems.
