#Losing is a portrait of an artist in conflict: conflict with himself. Dominic Hoey, formerly known as rapper Tourettes, is battling an incurable bone disease that renders him unable to express himself in the boisterous physical manner that was once the trademark of his live performances. Dominic uses his poetic talents to describe what it is like to be a prisoner in his body while suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.). However, he is far from hopeless or humourless – he has a voice, and an unrelenting need to create. This documentary is a testament to the unstoppable force that is Dominic Hoey. Opening in the solitude of Dominic’s bedroom we hear him speak through his own personal and poetic narrative of life living with a rare incurable disease. Following his ritualistic pill and vitamin consumption of alternative natural medicines, through to his community workshop with at risk youths teaching the practice of mindfulness & yoga during the day. All while traveling via poor and arduous conditions of the Auckland public transport system we witness a determination to keep on going no matter the difficulties. Concluding the story by evening with one of many public events that brings joy to peoples lives through his unique analog typewritten and often misspelt poems based on the exchanges with whomever he meets on any given night. All of which is a positive an uplifting process on the road to his own wellness and resistance against the inevitable restriction of mobility caused by this debilitating disease. Aimed at individuals suffering alone in the downward spiral of these related symptoms of arthritis. Those uncomfortably living with Ankylosing Spondylitis whose lives may not be as joyous. People looking for a little glimpse of hope, alternative healing and a brighter point of view from someone living with the same chronic illness.
