Is this the 76ers secret to becoming contenders2021|03:44
With Daryl Morey as the Sixers GM, they will now all of a sudden start to play like this right? Raining threes all over the place, Ben Simmons turns into Steph Curry, and… wo wo hold on. Not necessarily. Let me explain Morey’s philosophy and what that could mean for Philadelphia. Spoiler alert, it’s gonna be a very interesting season. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Daryl Morey loves analytics, and optimizing the team’s offense so that it brings as many points per given possession as possible. And of course we all know how that chase led to the Rockets shooting more and more threes season after season- culminating with this last one where they shot more than 45 threes per game. They actually took more shots from downtown then inside that line. So what makes me think that the Sixers won’t turn into the Rockets? Here’s my point. As a data driven guy, Morrey looks to his main player’s strengths, and then amplifies them. Cranks that up to 100%. It just so happens that Harden is a great shot maker and driver. Can get the foul almost at will. So that was Houston’s philosophy. Play to these strengths. For Philadelphia tho, it’s a whole different situation, but they do have a clear advantage on the floor. And it has to do with Joel Embiid. Check this out. When Joel posted up, on average the result was 1.2 points per possession. That would be the best and most efficient offense in the league. Of course, you can’t just run post ups the entire game, but this is just a statistic for you to think about. Embiid dominates defenders inside, at the same level that Harden did in his own way. So if you ask me, the first adjustment would be that Philadelphia make the post up to be the centerpiece of their offense. Is it old school, even archaic at this point? Sure. But numbers suggest that they need to. The same way the numbers suggested that the Rockets needed to shoot more threes. So right now, Joel is leading the league in post ups per game with almost 10. I expect that to go to almost 20 or more next season. At the same time, eliminate his three point shots. He’s been shooting between 3 and a half and 4 threes per game these past few seasons and has been widely criticized for bailing his opponents out instead of attacking them. So I feel this would be the first thing on the list. (BARKLI KLIP) From the post, it’s either barbeque chicken against his matchup, or a kick out to the open guy. Pretty simple and efficient style of play. Just like Houston’s philosophy. But this is where we get to the interesting part. In terms of outside shooting, they were number 9 in the league in 3 point percentage, which is not bad. With guys like Shake Milton and Furkan Korkmaz being the most efficient, but at the same time, the team was only 22nd in attempts. I know I said that they won’t become the Rockets, but I feel like this will go up. And do the sixers keep their almost 37% from downtown or does that go down with increased volume? If so, they sure need an extra shooter. But hey, maybe the shooting goes up from more open looks out of the post up. And second and probably most important thing, what happens to Ben Simmons, how does he fit into all of this? An all NBA defender and great piece to have in transition that’s for sure. But what magic trick does Morey do alongside Doc Rivers now as the head coach, to try and cater to what makes Simmons great instead of the Sixers looking like playing with 4 guys in half court offense. These are the questions that need answers but I feel like they have a signature play in the Joel Embiid postup and from there, they’ll build the offense. Let me know in the comments whether Morey can transform the Sixers into a title contender. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
